roofing and construction markets see solid growth and promise potential for future expansion

Building boom? Not exactly. Slow and steady growth is a more accurate description of the pace of the roofing and construction market today. According to Ian Butler, director of market research and statistics for INDA, Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry, the volume of nonwovens consumed by the North American building and construction segment in 2006 was roughly 490 million square meters valued at $800 million at the roll goods level. “Recently, this market has been growing in excess of 6% per year,” he stated. Included in the construction segment are housewrap and spunbonded polyester used as a substrate in modified bitumen roofing. There is also a small amount of nonwoven material used in miscellaneous roofing end uses. Suppliers to the building industry have observed a continued year-over-year increase in the use of polymeric housewraps and roofing underlayments; however, the rate of increase has slowed in the last year. This may be due to the cost pressures felt by home builders in the second half of 2006. Although housewrap material and installation is typically less than 1% of the total cost of a home, suppliers are quick to point out that these materials can provide important savings to the builder and homeowner during installation and after-sale.
